2024 CHF BC
BOARD CANDIDATES

Governance is the cornerstone of sound management of housing co-operatives and members will elect new directors to the board to shape the direction of the co-op housing movement in BC at this year’s  Annual General Meeting on Sunday, November 17.

There are five at-large board positions to be filled. Each position is for a two year term.

Members of the Board of Directors are responsible for the governance of our federation, providing overall direction for the CHF BC group of social enterprises, including approval and evaluation of CHF BC’s strategic priorities, policies, and budget.

You can meet our candidates below, then make sure you register to attend this important event so you can share our successes and hear the report on CHF BC’s work representing housing co-ops and inspiring, thriving co-operative communities.

I am seeking your support for election to the Board of CHF BC.

I live in Burquitlam Co-operative Housing Association, located in Coquitlam.

I have worked for Woodwards department store, in customer service, and for BC TEL / TELUS in Sales and Customer Service, retire from TELUS in 2015.

For the last 35 years I have served on the BOD on and off. I have served as President, Vice President, and Treasurer, at different times.

Before being a member of BCHA, I lived briefly at Hoy Creek Housing Co Op. I have seen the difference between different styles of management.

I have learned so much by dealing with different levels governments and different agencies. We, the BOD members of BCHA have relied on CHF  BC for advice, very often. I really appreciated it. I feel that being part of the BOD of CHF BC is a small way of “paying back”, and also to gain more knowledge.

I like being involved and helping where I can. That is the real spirit of Co Operation.

Stephanie Smith

I am seeking your support for election to the Board of CHF BC.

I live in Lore Krill Housing Co-operative, located in Vancouver.

I’m writing to ask for your vote for a second term on the board of CHF BC. I’ve been in community service since the late 1990s, working for social and economic justice with non-profits, community groups, legal and government working groups, and unions. Much of my work has focused on housing affordability, security of tenure, and community-building and organizing. I believe that cooperative values and principles support strong, healthy communities, and that cooperative housing can build the security that people need to thrive.

I’m currently the president of the Lore Krill Housing Cooperative in Vancouver, a 203-unit two-site co-op where I’ve lived for 20 years. My tenure as a CHF BC director has coincided with our co-op’s work on the remediation of both our sites, resulting in renewed buildings that remain deeply affordable to our members. My work in both of these roles over the past two years has reinforced the importance of good member service and strengthening co-op management – opinions I often hear shared by co-op residents elsewhere in the city and province.

If re-elected, I hope to contribute to CHF BC’s work by advocating for cooperative housing as a solution to the affordable housing crisis, and by supporting member-focused advocacy and improved member services so that member co-ops have the tools and support we all need to succeed.
