When the cedar sign fronting the Le Coeur Housing Co-op succumbed to 40 years of wind, rain and wear, falling down, it was placed in storage, members unsure what to do – replacing it with a sign of similar quality would easily cost thousands, and wouldn’t have the same history. But refurbishment options were also pricey and time consuming.
David Hiebert, an active member in BC’s co-ops for over 25 years, was pondering this as he made his way to his co-op’s garage sale. As a member of CHF BC’s Aging in Place committee, David was well-versed in working across generational divides.
He came to the conclusion that with a little work and help from some fellow co-op members, they could refurbish and re-install the sign themselves. When he shared his idea, fellow members, Jennifer and Minda, agreed.
Between the three of them they had enough electric sanders to make quick work of the job, before filling and repairing cracks, sealing, and adding a fresh coat of paint with new colours to match the buildings siding.
Another member, Zach stepped in to dig three-foot deep post holes, and the final installation was overseen by Lucas, a contractor and co-op member.
Lucas also helped David take full advantage of RONA’s group buying discount for CHF BC members, purchasing posts, cement, and other supplies.
David estimates that between the volunteer work and group buying discounts, the sign project cost about 10% of the cost to order and install a new sign.
Now, a beautiful and revitalized cedar sign is back where it belongs, welcoming people to the community that helped restore it at Le Coeur Housing Co-op.
