In the Vancouver Sun today, May 27, 2012, co-chairs of the Canadian Rental Housing Coalition, (Marg Gordon, CEO of the BC Apartment Owners and Managers Association and Wayne Wright, mayor of New Westminster and chair of the Metro Vancouver Housing Committee), make the case for renewed involvement from all levels of government to increase the supply of rental housing in Canada.Metro Vancouver needs 6,500 new rental homes every year, yet in the past five years only 1,000 purpose-built rental units have been introduced. This means that people are finding it more difficult to find affordable places to live that are close to work and transit. The Coalition is calling on the federal and provincial governments to get more involved in rental housing development by reforming tax policies and regulations to make rental housing easier to build. CHF BC is a founding member of the Coalition and co-authored the Canadian Rental Housing Coalition Charter last November. We support efforts to make it easier to build rental housing because that in turn will make it easier to develop new housing co-ops.
