We are seeking individuals who will contribute their skills and passion for co-operative living to our Board of Directors. Together, let’s shape a future where housing co-operatives stand as inclusive, sustainable communities of permanently affordable homes.

The CHF BC Board of Directors strongly believes that it can make a positive impact on the co-op sector by assembling individuals from different lived experiences to lead the organization. Regardless of their background, directors must be committed to demonstrate values and leadership that aligns with our mission and vision. They also must be be committed to a just and equitable society where diversity of age, gender, ethnicities, cultures and age are recognized as essential elements of a truly inclusive community.

This year, CHF BC is seeking candidates to fill 5 at-large director vacancies to serve 2-year terms. As well as 1 Vancouver Island director vacancy for a 2-year term.

CHF BC has identified a need for several skills among Board members; we especially welcome candidates with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Legal
  • Governance
  • Development
  • Financial and Accounting
  • Equity-deserving perspectives

About the Board

The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance of the federation, including COHO Management Services Society, a non-profit society providing professional management services to housing co-ops; and the Community Land Trust Group of Societies (CLT), a social purpose real estate developer and steward of permanently affordable homes.

As a director of CHF BC, you are also a director of these non-profit societies. This ensures that the business units contribute to the broader strategic priorities of CHF BC and serves the interests of housing co-ops, its primary stakeholders.

 

Meeting and Time Commitment

In addition to annual planning sessions, directors meet at least quarterly at a schedule to be determined by the board. Directors may choose to attend in person at our fully accessible Vancouver office or online. Directors will carry out additional duties through involvement with the various committees as determined by the board. On average, directors spend six to eight hours per month on CHF BC business. Directors may represent the organization at events hosted within the co-op and non-profit sectors. All travel and expenses related to the execution of a director’s duties are fully compensated.

Tasks and Duties:

Directors must agree to

  • Attend hybrid/virtual Board meetings ( average of ten throughout the year) either in-person or via Zoom.
  • Serve on one or more Committees of the CHF BC Board.
  • Prepare for and participate in the discussions and deliberations of the Board.
  • Attend member events and the Annual General Meeting.
  • Work with the Board to establish short & long-term goals, objectives, and priorities through strategic
  • Monitor the effectiveness of CHF BC through regular review of programs and
  • Promote the services and programs of CHF BC through events and community and sector networking.

Governance Principles

Directors must agree to

  • Govern CHF BC in accordance with policy and rules established by its members.
  • Uphold the Mission, Vision & Values of CHF BC.
  • Be aware of and disclose any conflicts of interest.
  • Recommend policy/rules revisions to the board and membership.
  • Act honestly, in good faith and in the best interests of CHF BC.
  • Treat in confidence all matters and information involving CHF BC, its board of directors, its committees,  its  employees  and  its  members.
  • Exercise the care, diligence and skill of a reasonably prudent person under comparable circumstances.

Elections

 

At-Large Directors are democratically elected by CHF BC’s members at the Annual Genera Meeting on November 17, 2024 for two-year terms.

Our Vancouver Island Director will be elected at out October 17, 2024 Island Council Meeting for a two-year term. 

Eligibility

You are eligible to run for election if:

  • You are at least 18 years of age
  • Your co-op or organization is a member of CHF BC whose dues are current
  • You have not been found by a court to be incapable of managing your own affairs
  • You do not owe your housing co-op any money
  • You are not an undischarged bankrupt

Deadline for the at-large director role is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
