Co-operative housing federations and associations across the country are recruiting and training new housing co-op educators. Being a housing co-operative educator is flexible work that offers great rewards for those passionate about supporting secure housing in healthy, vibrant co-operative communities.

The training program takes place between mid-February and late April 2024. It will be delivered fully online.
This program provides education and training to develop core competencies [PDF] for co-op housing educators. You will learn transferable skills, make a positive difference for housing co-operatives through flexible work, and be part of a supportive network of educators across the country. The knowledge you gain and skills you develop will be transferable to any adult learning environment.
Trainees will receive a Housing Co-operative Educator Training Program Certificate of Completion at the end of the program.
This program will provide education and training to develop core competencies for co-op housing educators. The course has 5 modules:
Approximately 30 hours for the training course, plus a mentorship period following the course. Live training will take place on Saturdays. This time commitment is approximately as follows:
This time will be spread out into approximately three to four hours per week for nine (9) weeks. The live training sessions will take place on the following Saturdays at 10 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Mountain / 1 p.m. Eastern / 2 p.m. Atlantic.
Learners will need reliable internet access and a device to participate in the live and on-demand training. You will also need to commit to the mentorship program as outlined by your sponsoring federation / association.
All program fees are sponsored by the co-op housing federation or association sponsoring your training.
Application Process
The application deadline is Wednesday, November 8, 2023. You will be notified if you have a place on the course by December 11, 2023.
Applications will be reviewed for eligibility based on the requirements set out in the application package. A short list of eligible applicants will be provided to federations/associations in each region, and they will decide on 2 or 3 individuals to sponsor for the first cohort in 2024. We also want to hear from people who are interested in future cohorts.
This educator training program is a joint initiative with co-operative housing federations across Canada known as the National Education Committee. The committee includes representatives from co-op housing federations/associations across Canada.
The education program is being developed by a consultant chosen by the National Education Committee, Sonia Byrne.
