Your unique experiences and stories are what make the co-op housing community thrive. Whether you’ve been a member for years or you’re new to the co-op, your perspective matters.

CHF BC’s Group Buying programs offer significant benefits for our member housing co-ops. By participating in these programs, member co-ops can provide quality co-op housing and services to their members. At the same time you are supporting efforts to increase the capacity of your federation and the broader community housing sector in British Columbia.

Here are two programs that provide valuable financial services to our members.

CHF BC has been advancing the co-op housing option for more than 40 years. We support almost 15,000 co-op homes in thriving, successful communities.

Here is how we are doing it.

The first resolution members will be voting on at the 2023 CHF Canada national business meeting promotes co-op action towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Co-op 2030 Vision.

As a co-op member, you have a say. Encourage your co-op delegate to review the 2023 Resolutions package on the CHF Canada Annual Meeting event site, and be ready to vote June 17.

Living in a co-op has many advantages including a sense of community and have a safe place to call home, but did you know that it may also point you towards have a rewarding career?

We are currently hiring full time administrative and governance support positions for summer vacation relief and also for permanent placements at co-op offices around the Lower Mainland.

Our Co-op Housing Spring Forum on May 28 is quickly approaching! This event will be an exciting celebration of of co-op living for all ages.

We look forward to once again offering a hybrid in-person and online format as well as a live broadcast in Victoria for our Vancouver Island members.

On April 28, 2023, CHF BC resumed its program of neighbourhood events with a group of housing co-ops located in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Members from a number of housing co-ops from the neighbourhood had the chance to meet and discuss issues of common interest and visit several of the neighbourhood non-profit housing co-ops.

CHF BC board member Sahara Shaik has received a prestigious Community Award from the BC Achievement Foundation.

The Community Award program honours excellence and inspiring achievement in community service and leadership. It celebrates British Columbians who go above and beyond in their dedication and service to others. The award recognizes individuals who devote their time and energy to making their communities more caring, dynamic, beautiful, resilient and inclusive.

Atira Women’s Resource Society is nonprofit organization based in Vancouver, B.C.. They have found a unique solution to address the affordable housing crisis and improve employee well-being by providing housing to its staff members. This move has sparked interest in the potential for co-operative housing initiatives among other nonprofit organizations.

CHF Canada and CHF BC have close ties. Staff at both organizations have excellent working relationships, sharing resources and best practices through various collaborations.

In February 2023, CHF Canada invited CHF BC to participate in its annual Member Services Meeting in Ottawa, bringing together people from across Canada over a couple of days to discuss critical issues for non-profit housing co-ops.

More than 30,000 people live in co-op housing in BC. Together, co-op members are creating homes and communities. Like other housing groups, co-op members face challenges, aging buildings and higher construction costs.

BC Housing talks with Thom Armstrong, CEO, Co-operative Housing Federation of BC and Tiffany Duzita, Executive Director, Community Land Trust. They discuss how partnerships, committed co-op members, and access to financing from partners like BC Housing and Vancity help co-ops thrive.
