Lower Mainland co-op members packed the conference room at the Vancouver offices of CHF BC and CHF Canada for the joint Member Forum on Monday, September 9. After a quick review of the latest news from the federations they heard what they’d come for: CHF Canada’s Diana Devlin presenting Beyond the 2020 Compass: What’s next? Diana gave members a summary of the 2020 Vision program. (Members can download a copy of her presentation slides here). In between breaks for snacks and refreshments, she covered 2020 Vision fundamentals and the role of the Compass service in developing a co-op’s mission statement and vision for the future. Whether co-ops have completed the 2020 Compass or not, considering a co-op’s place in the world is only one step towards becoming a 2020 Co-op. The four other steps of the 2020 Vision program include establishing good governance and principled leadership, sound management, a long-term plan and a commitment to environmental sustainability. A 2020 Co-op will be better able to meet the challenges of the future, whether that means life after the end of its operating agreement, or simply managing the demands of aging buildings. CHF Canada and CHF BC can provide tools, resources and facilitation to help co-ops complete the program. Members are encouraged to check out the 2020 Vision website and get in touch with one of the federations to learn more and complete or simply start the process.
